I was recently looking for a newell to try, and I got this this morning. From my research this is the Blackie model, with a 4:1 gear ratio. This has an aluminum spool right?  Is that correct? I want to service it, what should I keep an eye out for, what should I replace? Per the previous owner he has not used it in years and it was just sitting in his garage. I'm guessing change the drags, clean the bearings or replace them. Thank you.

yes, 4:1, aluminum spool. if not already done, replace drag washers with carbon fiber, uses same washers as penn 500. reel already has stainless gears, so you can upgrade drag system to Bryan Young 5 stack to get smoother and higher drag pressure capability. if bearings are smooth, quiet, and spin well, clean and oil, otherwise bearings are inexpensive. the blackie reels are known for sideplate cracking, so be careful not to overtighten sideplate screws upon reassembly. the reel can still be fished with cracks.
