I have a friend that has a Newell 332-5 and is complaining that when the clicker is engaged on free spool it doesn`t sound as loud as when it is in gear. Is the clicker sound supposed to be the same whether the reel is in gear or free spool?

No different from a musical instrument. When the line is pulling the spool the sound resonates differently. The spool is spinning freely. When turning the handle the pinion and drive system are now connected and totally changes the pitch.

If the line-in click is louder than the line-out click it means the two sides of the tension ring are not symmetrical.  Stare at it for a while and then gently massage one side.

If you mess around with that spring you can turn a clicker into a ticker or a clacker or a clucker.  It's easy to screw up though.

The clicker"spring" is made out of plastic and can`t be shaped. It looks as if one end is slightly worn.

Buy a new kit from Cortez Conversions for a crisper sound if you like. They work really well and you have the P series style button. Tom did a great job of making these for us.
