how to disable a roller clutch bearing

why don't you approach it from a different direction?

start w/ a pitching/flipping lo-pro w/ a good toggle spool release on top

& chop it up to <5oz, keeping the instant A/R

if you can reel lefty, the spool-forward Daiwa's might be easiest:



...sorry, don't know which (if any?) R/H lo-pro's have a spool-forward design

or that "super-friendly to palming" top-toggle, like my TD-X

I went to Boca Bearing and found a needle bearing like Robert Janssen described and a better quality spool bearing.  They had the exact size for both.  Fifteen bucks worth of bearings to monkey around with a $30 reel.  Still cheap entertainment though.

I am a bit confused about this.  The one way bearing style that I am used to seeing on reel handles has ridges on the outer diameter and does not fit tightly into the pocket on the sideplate.   I don't see how a drop in replacement roller bearing would work here.

When it doesn't really matter if the outer race moves against the head plate then you do not need the ridges.
