Couldn't pass up the deal on this near mint Abu 5000.  One more to add to my collection of old 5000 from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s.  I'm assuming this reel was manufactured in 1999, but not really sure.  Been a couple years since I've serviced an ultra-cast model.  There have been tutorials on some similar reels posted to this site in the past, but unfortunately the photos have disappeared, probably a kidnap by Photobucket.

Removing handle lock plate.

A couple years ago I learned this c-clip is very important.  Lose it, and you'll never get the reel to run correctly.

Removing friction washer.

Removing star drag.

Loosening thumb screws allows removal of the head plate.

The cast control knob has been removed, shim and axle clip are intact.

Removing side plate screws.

Removing side plate.

Removing belleville pressure washers.

Removing plastic crank bearing.

Removing drive gear, anti-reverse dog, and drag assembly.  Both the pinion and drive gear were dry as a bone.

Removing spool.

A look at clutch assembly, pinion gear, and yoke.

Removing position holder.  It snaps right off.

Removing pinion and yoke.

Removing clutch arm.

Removing release trigger.

Removing link arm.

Removing shim.

This return spring is the only spring in this reel's assembly.

A look at the main gear and drag assembly.

Removing the nylon spool pinion gear to extract the spool bushing.

Removing snap ring so clutch washer and ball bearing may be removed.

Removing clutch washer.

Ball bearing and shim is removed.

Removing three screws from left side cover plate.

A look at the idler cog.

Removing carriage screw lock so level wind assembly may be removed.

A look at the worm gear, worm guard, and line guide.

Removing the level wind cap so the pawl can be removed.

Everything was taken apart other than the idler cog and components inside cast control cap to be cleaned.  The spool bushing and bearing, axle shaft, and level wind assembly were lubed with Ardent Reel Oil. Most every other part was lubed with Super Lube if needed.

The level wind has been reassembled on the frame.

All components lubed and reinstalled on head plate.

Fastening up the handle side cover.

Bearing and bushing and components of spool have been reassembled.

Idler cog has been lubed.  It was bone dry at disassembly.

Left side plate back in place.

Reinserting spool and axle.

Brake blocks have been pushed in to aid in reinstalling the handle side plate.

Snap ring has been reinstalled.

Tightening thumb screws fastens the handle side plate back together.

Crank bearing and belleville washers reinstalled.

Reattaching star drag.

Reattaching the friction washer.

Handle is back in place.

The c-clip is back in place.

Reattaching handle lock plate, and this reel is finished.

I too have a few of these older 5000 reels. I admire your tutorial. Great pictures.

This is the later 3-stack drag 5000 and can really benefit from Carbontex drags. The earlier 5000s with a single drag washer really didn't improve much for me, but that one will come to life. Great tutorial Chester! 8)
