I opened my late '60s vintage Abu 5000B for the first time and found that it has two of the "medium" size brake blocks.

The Schematic shows a "small," "medium," and "large" pair of brake blocks.  Is the reel supposed to use all three sizes or just one size (or some combination)?  What does the brake block do?

Thanks,
Brian

The brake blocks are to reduce backlashes, the larger the brake blocks the more braking action, they should be used in matched sets. You can remove them entirely to increase casting distance but you better have a well tuned thumb.

No problem,I can remember when my grandfather got an Ambassadeur to replace his old knucklebuster back in the mid 60's and they are still top of the line.

You can buy replacement brake blocks in the different sizes.

I mentioned in my original post that they were size "medium," but I just realized I actually have no clue what size they are since I have nothing to compare them to.

Does anyone have the measurements of the various sizes per chance?

Buy a pair or two of each.  They are the easiest thing in the world to lose.  I'm good at spending other people's money.
