Picked up a few milk crates of "experienced" Senators and some of the Aluminum spools from the arbor out abour 1/3 to the edge loaded with heavy salt after the line is stripped.  Before I attack this I'm looking for any tips or tricks you folks may have to clean things up.
Thanks,

I will soak in warm soapy water for a while then scrub with a brush, clean it up. I will then soak in some CLR, scrub, then a vinegar bath, then rinse. Then decide if you are going to "fix" with a filler , paint or what ever. That will clean up a really bad spool, what ever step you want if its not too bad.

Second the warm soapy water soak - I would use standard dish detergent added to the warm water. And old toothbrush will help to mechanically remove crusted salt that's been loosened in the soak.
