Although thousands of miles away, I always fund this forum like a big happy family... and Sal, you were always there on every page for all of us.

You were such a kindly soul and a thorough gentleman.

Rest in peace my friend, you will be missed...  :(

I'm so sorry to hear this.  It is so powerful to see how everyone here really cares about each other.  Everyone freely gives of their time and resources, something of which Sal really exemplified.

I just saw this and I am shocked . . . Sal was a "true gentleman" and a "wealth of information".

My condolences to Sal's family and to the many forum members who, like me, looked up to Sal for his generosity and good humor.  He just seemed to be a very good man.

Hello,

There are no words adequate enough to convey the Ciarlante family's gratitude, for the love and support that we received from you all, at this most difficult time!

Alyssa, Anthony and I just gathered enough courage, last night, to read all of the lovely comments and view the terrific pictures, that everyone was gracious enough to post! We were overwhelmed! I must admit that we had to stop, a few times, to catch our breath and dry our eyes! After we were through, we felt the love encircling us and we found comfort in your stories and comments! For this, and so much more, I would like to thank you all, from all three of us!

I would also like to say a few words about how Sal felt about this community. He truly enjoyed talking with, getting to know, and befriending so many members here! He was ALWAYS happiest when he was downstairs, in his workroom, working on a reel or a handle. I loved to listen to talk about his current projects...it was always with such passion and joy! Although he was terribly disappointed that he needed to stop working, post-diagnosis, he was thrilled that he had more time to dedicate to his wonderful world of fishing (reels, handles, catalogs, books, buddies, stories, pictures, etc.) But, by far, his favorite part of his fishing world was alantani.com! I cannot believe how many people, who have reached out to me, since Sal's passing, have told me that they knew about the site. He was so proud to be a part of it, and he absolutely cherished the wonderful friendships that he made, as part of it! His goal was to have every member come through the Philadelphia area, eventually, and sit at our table to share a meal and a few stories! Please know that the invitation still stands!

I was happy to see that Alan posted Sal's obituary. This community was not only mentioned in there, it was also mentioned in the eloquent Eulogy that our daughter, Alyssa, delivered at his funeral.

Here is an excerpt from her lovely words: " My dad was an avid fisherman and was passionate about collecting and refurbishing fishing reels. His passion led him to find an online fishing community where he not only gave fishing reel repair advice to thousands of like-minded folks from around the world - he also established deep personal relationships and gained many dear friends. I loved to listen to my dad share his expertise and watch him in his workroom as he milled custom handles for his friends' fishing reels. I'll never forget the days we spent out on the water, with the entire Atlantic ocean stretching in front of us, my dad trying to steer into the little waves so that the boat would fly into the air and make my brother and I laugh."

Sal's funeral was held on October 16, 2020. We respected the pandemic and had only immediate family in attendance. It rained horribly, all day, and I felt as though the heavens wept for Sal.

I would like to leave you all with a personal note, in my husband's memory. Although it is not possible to sum up a life so well-lived and so beautiful, and a love so rare and so special, in just a few sentences.

Sal's life was not this past year of suffering, in which he confirmed our suspicions that he was the strongest man that Alyssa, Anthony, and I had ever known or will know, it was all of the years before that!

I whispered to Sal, on our 35th anniversary just a few weeks ago, that our story wouldn't end like this. It didn't. I will carry the love, for my husband and by my husband, with me forever and I need only to look in the eyes of my children to see their father's beautiful soul! Sal was so very proud of the life we shared and the family we created! He was such a kind, loving, generous, witty, and charming man and he was such a presence in any room that he graced! On the day after I met Sal, 38 years ago, I told a friend that I was going to marry him because he was "the nicest guy I had ever met"... as it turns out, I was right! For 38 years we laughed, loved, cried, struggled, rejoiced, and held hands through it all! I know that I will see my husband again, someday, but until then I'll try very hard to honor his beautiful life!

Thank you, again, on behalf of Alyssa, Anthony and myself, for all of the love and support!! I wish you all a blessed Autumn!

With love and gratitude,
Cathy Ciarlante (and family)

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Cathy, You are a fine woman and a testament to Sal's legacy of doing things right.  He sure did it right when he married you.
We always knew there was a great woman behind that amazing man.  He never mentioned his birthday, but was proud to let everyone know when his anniversary came around.
Thanks for putting us all at ease with your strength.
Best to you and the family,
Dom
