I got this reel as donor to take some parts from it (thanks again secret ohana member), I took the parts I needed but being a Reelhead I cannot leave the 90% of the reel in the "reel junkyard", so I gonna try to make it work again and use it as loaner for a friend with a Panga charter.

but the spool had tons of white heavy corrosion in almost 70% of it, I leaved for few days on vinegar and took most of the corrosion but some parts the corrosion was really hard to take it out, it wasnt more a surface corrosion so, as long as I was taking it out there were deep marks and holes on the spool, so seeing how bad it was I took a wire brush and scratched it all over, that helped a lot but still the badly pitted zones had a lot of sharp egdes which were no good for any kind of fishing line, well, my last attemp the make this spool in usable condition was to take a dremel and use a wire brush tip and try to polishing it.

that make the spool to lose all the sharp valleys and corners on the pitted areas, finally took some sanding paper and sanded it a bit and now feels smoother but nothing compared to a new spool also, its almost 80% of the spool bare aluminium now.
still not feel confident to use the spool as is, I dont know if now take a polishing stone tip on the dremel and try to make it smoother or just use some "hard nail polish coat", yamaha grease on the bottom when spooling the reel and called it a day.

the back of the sides of the spools looks in good shape, the corrosion was bad but seems that it didnt get any near to the other side of the wall of the spool.

so, what do you think amigos, is this spool teasted or what would you still do to make it look better.

Mix up a bunch of JB weld, rub it in good and sand it smooth again.
I woke today and suddenly nothing happened.

Any machine is a smoke machine if you use it wrong enough.

That would look amazing. Citristrip for paint and enamel, easy off for anodized.

that was my first option since I already did a similar job on a tib frame

but wanted to check if there is another option.

i would use the wire wheel side of a bench grinder.  quick and easy.  bottom line is that the anodizing is toast no matter what, so brushing away what's left of the anodizing would not be that much of an issue.  then scrub on a light coat of grease, wipe off all the excess, spool it up with mono and call it done.  re-anodizing the spool would probably cost more than a new spool.   :-\

:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

well, after double checking some specs I think mine is a 400h reel not the 350h, the drag washers are the same size of the 450h and pretty similar is OD to a penn 113h, actually the drag washers of this reel are:

ID   13.02 mm
OD  27.92mm

B.Y.  I couldn found where to search for the part number but took some pics of the spool, you might know if according to the size if I have a 400h or 350h reel.

Compadre- get all the white nastiness out. coat it as Alan says and fish it, or sand all as smooth as you can and paint with farm implement epoxy paint. If your wife will let you cure in oven at 85C so more the better. I had a nasty 9/0 Penn spool that I did thusly- maybe it wont do every use but as the 4th 9/0 in line it will step up. Actually looks good in gloss black.

You can sand it out and polish or I had someone to sand blast and powder coat mine,,,,, ;D

JasonGotaProblem

You could sand that off in 20 min with 320 grit. Then another maybe 25 to get it shiny. A spool would be easy just spin it and hold the sandpaper still.

Alex, I have a NOS spool if you are interested. $20 shipped.
