I have always had a problem as to what to use, in threaded holes before painting. I have used tape tooth picks and you name it. Getting me some plugs, I see these on Amazon. One thing I do is use Vaseline on some outer parts. And I remove the pinion gear.

This thread is on powder coating, so techniques like masking tape and Vaseline used with liquid paints will not work because of the oven baking to cure powders.

For powder, you can use special high temp tape, the plugs mentioned, or simply wipe the powder off of unwanted areas.  The last is a bit tricky, to do without disturbing the powder that you want to keep while removing every last bit of unwanted powder.

In terms of using silicone plugs with liquid paint, it might work, but most sprays will stick to the plugs enough that it might not be ideal.

Got ya ;)
May try the plugs anyway with a little Vaseline, as to not pull the paint away.

That's a good idea.
