Does anyone know if the maroon 501 tailplate is stamped 500 or is blank? Thanks

Don't have maroon but my black one is labeled w/"No. 501".

I think they are only marked on the head plate.        Rudy

Blank jigmaster tail plate is not that uncommon.

Here is a 60's very dark maroon 501 (head plate is stamped 501)

The 500 came-out in 1958. The 501(Jigmaster Jr.) came out in 1966. Prolly had a bunch of marked 500 tail-plates to use-up and wanted to get them out to market before producing generic(no number)plates.
Also, You can see that they still have an indentation around the outside margin, but no outer ring. The Jigmaster is an updated version of the slower geared 259, Long Beach, Live Bait Caster and they both have the same dimensions. The 259 had double rings on each side, so maybe they used those molds(sans the lettering) for the new Jigmasters.
Fishing tackle is an art form and all fish caught on the right tackle are"Gfish"!
