Starting Out with DAM

I have always loved to chase smallmouth. They are the King of the bass family in my opinion but they are somewhat scarce here in Alabama

in Southern climates within SMB range, go up in ELEVATION!!!
going 1000' UP, is like driving North many hrs. & many 100's of miles
not sayin' it applies to every body of water, or that you'll find mini-Canada,
but, in general, you should encounter a noticeable improvement in SMB:LMB ratio

Not sure if this is right place but found old 220n reel in good shape cosmetically in the garage. Thing is stiff but sure it is just old grease. Question I have us what the does the AR switch feel like to engage when properly working. Mine seems to function but the feels very light and flimsy on this otherwise tank of a reel. Thanks

On a 220N, the A/R lever is under the rotor.

It likely is being affected by 40 year old original grease.

Sometimes when the grease stiffens, it could cause this —- and sometimes the little spring will also be stretched by a glob of hardened grease.

The reel needs a full disassemble, cleaning of all parts, inspection of any issues or worn parts, replacement of any worn parts (unlikely), reassembly using modern synthetic grease and oil, tuning & adjusting —- then it should be good for another lifetime.

It will operate as new when completed, and be a pleasure to fish.

Thanks. Started on the spool today - pics below (posted on beginner thread too). Seems to be missing soft drag washer(all are metal) and the brass washer in the middle looks like a shim. What do I need to get?

These drag washers get mixed up over the years.

And generally, most combinations will work —- some better than others.

Here is the correct order.

There is also a hex asbestos washer under the spool that interacts with the under-spool spindle brass washers.  There should be (2) round brass spacer washers under the brass eared bridge plate that sets on top of the black ratchet wheel.  Maybe the one brass washer in your picture belongs there.

Looks like you have everything right —- except the round brass disc in the middle of your photo should be a hex asbestos washer.
