So if one wants to properly tighten those they need to be out.

   Drown the bearings in oil ,  I have two of them .     When they smell saltwater they use to bind up ...

If it's all 3, were they all used in saltwater? If so, I'd guess the ball bearings, like others have said. Kayak fishin gets water into mine except for the Zebco Cardinals and maybe the Diawa BG I use.
Fishing tackle is an art form and all fish caught on the right tackle are"Gfish"!
