So what tool works best for tightening the (recessed) nut on the old graphite handles? Been using an adjustable wrench and today even tried a 9/16 socket, but both slip. The plastic spacer doesn't let me grab the nut properly and I've damaged the nut a bit.

Do what you can with that you have where you are

If you look carefully at a 9/16 box end wrench you will see the edge is tapered so you do not get a snug fit on the nut. Just file off about 3/32 off the face of the box end wrench and it will work perfect. Been using mine on hundreds of Newells with no problem.

Yes, I noticed that too.
I have it tight for now, but the nut took some damage from using the adjustable wrench at an awkward angle.
Thanks for the tips.
