Daiwa BG -> MQ upgrade?

Doesn't look like Daiwa USA listed the BGMQ parts diagram, but did find it on their AU site.

Am curious if anyone else has postulated or attempted to upgrade their existing BG to a MQ frame, etc.

What would be the benefit of this? I don't intentionally ask that in a flippant way, I just dont follow.

The big thing they push about the MQ frame is the increased size of the main gear they can stuff in there, can't see the point of trying to stick a smaller gearset in an MQ body?

Honestly the more I think, the more this reminds me of myself and the ideas I'd come up with when I first started on my way down this rabbit hole.

My guess is you're intrigued by the idea of modding reels, you already own a BG, and saw parts from an MQ as a logical upgrade.

I don't think these two are compatible, and even if they were I doubt it would be a worthwhile upgrade.

Of course if you do try to go down this road, we will of course do our best to guide you on your journey.

yeah, I researched for a few more minutes via the parts lists and a video and it certainly doesn't seem possible or sensible to try to parts swap the MQ bits and 2016 BG bits. Rather, if the MQ improvements are appealing enough then spend the money to buy a complete reel and put the '16 BG on a back-up rod.

If the cost and effort are not concerns, nothing wrong with experimentation. At worse (if nothing irreversible was applied), the parts are completely incompatible and go back to their original config.

If lucky, something is found compatible AND actually offers a benefit for a new "Franken-reel"

no, I haven't fished my '16 BG 5000, but might get to soon and was just curious what the latest and greatest is out there.

I bent the main gear's handle attachment point on my 2500 and my 4000 despite neither seeing that much stress. As such I no longer recommend them but continue to fish the ones i own.

Different models, different production runs, etc., may result in variable quality and experience. Alan recorded this on the 2021 SOA of my BG6500 and I:



My BG6500 has fulfilling 40lb long range spinner duty since 2017.

The simple solution is to buy a 20 Saltiga, then there is no upgrade.
