I have a few rods missing guide inserts.
Are they just pressed in from the top? Also,if I measure the ID of the
guide would that be the size insert required? Is zirconium or hardaloy
Better or worser?

Keta

I have never successfully replaced inserts and now replace the entire guide.

Fuji SIC guides are the best ,never had insert come off .Other guides may be lighter but SIC is hardest material

That's amateur stuff. Pull and replace the guide. You know how now.

I have glued rings that have come adrift back in original inserts.   Never new inserts.
My success rate has been around 10% so it is not worth the effort.

As an emergency measure because I need the rod and don't have a spare guide available, I would still attempt it, but will immediately buy 2 new ones.

Epoxy is the more successful glue but also the more awkward to use.

Don't you have another old beater rod you can steal a guide from? Or maybe even a buddy has an donor rod laying around?

Mud Hole has a lot of new guides and supplies and usually ship same day.  I get things from them in less than a week and I am in a semi remote part of Oregon on the other side of the country.

You've gotten good advice this far. Guides aren't that expensive unless you go with top of the line stuff, which you would probably only use on a top of the line blank. You'll be wasting your time and effort trying to replace a ring, and it won't last that long. Just replace the guide, or the whole set if you want the rod to look uniform. Hardloy & alconite are both decent choices, they're just a little heavier, if you don't want to spring for SICs.

Hardloy was discontinued a few years ago as the other Al Ox guides got better. I've seen no need for SiC in general fishing, and have fished hardloy / hialoy / aluminum oxide since the beginning of braid and personally not had issues. Guide replacement due to banging rod on something else, not actual fishing. I'd wrap in a new guide of the aluminum oxide or alconite variety, whatever matches color, and call it a day.
