Hi All. Sometimes life gets busy and reels remain on the to-do. Despite that I got one 220P fixed up and then along came a bargain 2000. Very smooth running. An interesting beast. The body is much bigger than the 220P, so it's heavier. Not as big a body as the 330P still on my list. The spindle is thicker too. But the skirted spool has much the same capacity as the smaller 220P. There is one thing which might be something Fred could answer. There is quite a bit of play in the bail wire where it connects behind the non-rolling "roller". This is one aspect of the reel which is a bit less rock solid than older DAMs including the 220P which has a similar bail arm to 220N. Any thoughts? Fixable or is it just something to live with? Were they rock solid when new? There's also rather more plastic than in the 220P. Cool trip mechanism! Greetings from Holland. Lorcan

Hi Lorcan —-

There should be a little bit of "play" where the bail fastens at the roller side — but probably not as much as you might be describing.

And, if there is too much flex —- that won't hurt anything, or affect the line lay —- providing the carbide tungsten line roller and hex nut are secure and tight.  The bail wire just catches the line upon retrieve.

But it would bug me since it is not right.

The fix is to remove the bail wire —-insert the screwed end into a block of hardwood, not softwood —- clamp the wood block in a vise —- then finding where there is a small hole on the backside (this is how the bail was assembled at the factory) —- using a tiny punch and ball peen hammer, just re-peen the hole to tighten up the bail wire inside the assembly.

When completed, it should have a tiny bit of play —- but it will be back to factory fresh condition.

Best, Fred

Thanks Fred. I was surprised because there is no play at in my 220N and 220P. It's not something that will affect function indeed but it just feels odd, especially when manually closing the bail - a nice feature the predecessors lack. Super smooth drag too. Has been looked after and greased and other than the bail it really only needed a clean. Spring is coming. The carpet are waking up nicely as we head towards close season for pike and perch here in NL.
