I was servicing my daughter's reel..a Shimano Sienna 1000...

The inside looks clean considering it has been used in saltwater...so i did not bother removing everything and cleaning it..

As i was inspecting the gears, i noticed this...

The oscillating gear (part number 9384) is not circular.... ???

I removed it to check if there are shredded pieces of the gears but everything is smooth...

Even the gears on the drive gears (part number 9378) is not circular....what gives...

The thing is if you crank it, everything is smooth as butter...

Should i replace it or leave it be?

Reel is less than a year old.

I did a quick search, the oscillating gear is really not circular but a bit square... ???

The small gear in the drive gear is a bit oval.....

And there must be a perfect alignment when you put it back again...the arrows must have some use...

I guess, when i took it out and returned it, i hit the correct spot without looking... ;D

When i service this reel again i will check... :D

The idler gear is made this way. On the maingear and the idler there are alignment markings and when you put them together they have to be lined up for the reel to work properly.

Tile,

Would you know how the alignment is?  which arrows should align?

i guess when i returned the gear, i hit the right alignment....lucky me... ;D

The arrows can be seen on your main gear and on the oscillating gear. any of the two triangles lined up will work fine.
