So the other day I ran into a guy who has a magnetic conversion on a Abu Reel ( a round one ) not a Revo , when I cast this monster the lure went out about 80 yards or so , quite impressive , that got me thinking , has anyone done this on a low profile reel like the Revo Toro Winch ??? If so , HOW ??? Is there a kit for these ??? Help ?? :)

Hi,
Send Russ @ Blackdog Tackle an email - He does adjustable mag kits for Abu and other reels.
Check this link for details:

Alternatively it is rather quite easy to mag a reel by using a small stainless steel disc or washer (preferably one with magnetic properties doh!).
Epoxy that to the lefthand side plate. Its position should roughly line up to the inside edge of the spool. The secret with the magnets is to use
neodymium (a rare earth magnet). Simply add 1 or more 4-5mm mags to the steel washer (they will stay in place - neodymium is the strongest mag
you can get outside of a laboratory). The mags should be arranged n-s-n (poles that is) etc.
I find around 4-5 secs freespool (with the mags) copes with most situations. Its probably worth carrying a small selection of mags, cos they are cheap.
A specialist shop isn't necessary - they are readily available on Ebay  ;)

??? Tried Blackdog !! They just jibbered jabbered an email , but offered no solution !! Anyone else ?? ???

I have never opened one up but it would all depend on how much room is in the reel to work with (ie. size of magnets where they are to be placed) and composition of the spool. That reel from the schematic doesn't look like it has a lot of room to work with and a standard ABU single mag post just doesn't look like it will work.

You could cut a washer into pieces to fit it, remember to check the clearance between spool and sideplate

I have done some research on the reel and it looks as if it does have a cast control system in the left plate, there is a video on it on the ABU website, don't know if that would help or not.

The Revo here is way spendy..some over 400 Canadian, so there are none out there locally. Folks would rather buy a round Shimano for 275 than a 400 dollar Revo. I took a look at the schematic collection, and there are 11 pages with 10 per page. Lots of variations.

Making an adjustable mag setup for any reel is actually quite simple:
1: As I posted earlier a washer or plate glued in the side plate will accept a variety of neodymium magnets - but you have to open the reel to change the setting!

2: Another method is as follows (see attached photos).

no1.jpg - The finished mod.
no2.jpg - Inside the sideplate.
no5.jpg - The assembled (but not fitted) mag system - alternate north south poles.
no6.jpg - The individual parts - Adjustment knob with 3mm thread insert, spring, mag plate and mags (section of steel washer).

Either method will necessitate the removal of the centrifugal brake system from the spool (this will stop it hitting the magnets).
The adjustment knob is a thing of choice.
If possible select a washer that just fits within the friction ring (this will ensure the magnets are close to the edge of the spool).
Drill a pilot hole through the side plate and frame (preferably from just inside the friction ring). Drill the final hole from outside using the pilot hole as a guide.
Then cut a section of the washer as big as necessary (I have never needed more than 4 mags on any reel!). Drill a hole in the middle and solder/glue a nut in position.
Insert threaded knob (from outside doh!). Place the spring on the thread (inside now). Offer the mag plate with nut to the thread. The mags will try to stick to everything.
All I do is pick one up on the end of a small screw driver and offer it to the mag plate. Then do the same with other.

Now you can spend hours & hours trying out your creation  ;D

Most of all have fun  ;)

;D You guys are amazing , thank you for your time , I appreciate it .. I will see what i can come up with and keep you all posted , thanks again ..............

Where can you buy those adjustable kits from?
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

I'm gonna have to build some of those for some of my small reels. Adjustable units in most Penn reels are pretty much out because of the lack of room you have to work with, but I am gonna see what I can do with them too.

Mr. Saltydog , please let me know how you go about it , sounds interesting , remember I have a Revo Toro winch 61 if that helps , thank you for your time . Anyone else with any ideas ?? Please feel free ....
