Van Staal self repair kit

Has anyone bought the repair kit and done the service?  I have some older Van Staals that do not have the "nut" on the handle so I don't think they are able to use the kits.  But I also have some that have the nut on the handle.  Are only the nutted handles able to use the new kits?  How hard was the process?  I am just trying to decide whether or not to send em back or try and do this years service myself.  thanks in advance for any advice.   chris
