I need to mag my Penn 535. I need to know how and where to get the magnets.

Please note this is not a 535 mag. It has no magnets.

Thanks.

There are several companies online to order magnets, your looking for rare earth magnets, also known as neodymium magnets or samarium-cobalt magnets. I got mine at Grainger. I "magged" a Penn 506hs Jigmaster. if you want, you can glue the magnets directly to the side plate, or for changing configuration of the magnets you will need to install a ferrous (something the magnet can stick to) metal mounting for the magnets, I used 4 steel washers 3/8" Dia. The magnets I used were 1/4" tall x 1/4"Dia. I got lucky with configuration, in that the magnet to spool clearance ended up at 0.0050",  you can insert 1 or more magnets and flip them to alternate polarity to fine tune the amount of resistance or "Lenz effect" (look up Lenz law in physics). I've tried up to 5 magnets but found substantial loss of casting distance, I like my set up with 1 magnet. Heres a couple of tips, make sure you measure the clearance from spool to side plate before you order magnets and mounting, mag brakes will only work on non-ferrous metallic spools like aluminum, distance from magnets to spool is important, less is better, mounting your magnets on a ferrous metal, will increase magnetic effect, so does alternating polarity (+- is stronger than ++ or --). Finally, here some links.http://www.songslinger.net/magsquid.htm, http://www.jabubbles.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/stansoft/magging.html
Good luck on your project! :)

I have magged one reel; it was a 506. I used three steel washers and mounted the magnets in alternating polarity.   It worked great, but I sold on eBay since I couldn't keep 20 pound mono out of the sideplates. It went to Hawaii; the buyer did a full frame and spool upgrade. I've always wondered if he was an AT.com member.
