New to saltwater guy. I'm wondering if a CSD-10S would be a really good 20-30 lb. reel, or can I do much better for the same or similar cost? Your replies and/or advice will be most appreciated. Thanks.

more like 60 pound hollow core spectra and a 30, 40, 50 or 60# topshot reel.
send me an email at alantani@yahoo.com for questions!

You don't say if you are using Mono or Braid line. I have a couple of Okuma Andros 5II they are best suited to 40lb braid however I have used 20lb mono on one of them. Even the 5II holds a heap of mono and way too much if you are using braid. The drag cam is a bit fierce though for 20lb with the ramp up of drag a bit too sudden. Most of the small to mid size Okuma seem to be aimed at  40-60lb braid use.  The Andros  5 now comes in a narrow spool with reduced capacity and would be better suited to light braid use. Have fun deciding.

If you are only going to fish 20-30lb and want a Okuma star drag, the Cortez would be sufficient at a lower price point.
More info would be helpful. Ate you going to be jigging, live bait fishing etc. ? Mono or Braid?

Will likely fish with bait most of the time. Line will probably be braid with a fairly short flourocarbon leader. But, I'm a new saltwater guy as I indicated, so advice from you experienced folks will certainly aid me in my decision. Thanks for the input.

Three to four years back, the now discontinued Okuma Catalina CT-25C, CT-25CS, CT-30C, or CT-30CS would have been considerations; these are now relegated to eBay or Craigslist market. There's a few pics of a CT-25C here: http://alantani.com/index.php?topic=101.0. Look for the disassembled reel pic 1/3rd the way down the post and then 2/3rds down for pics in action.

In April, 2014? A consideration would be the Penn Fathom FTH25N or FTH30 with serious thoughts to swapping out the 6:1 for the 4.8:1.

There's also the Penn Squall SQL25N and SQL30...

I don't feel the swap to a lower gear is needed in the Fathom line until you start fishing 40lb test and above. I fish my Fathom 25N with 30lb test and swapped out the stock gears for Black Pearls 4.8:1, which are great gears, but swapped the stock gears back as the torque of the 6:1's are fine for 30lb test and less.

If the Okuma line of reels are what you want I'd look at the Cortez like conchydong said.

I prefer a reel with an all metal frame which the Cortez does not have. Recognizing the Cedros CDS-10S may be more reel than necessary for 20-30 lb., is it so much overkill that it won't do the job. Is there some other superior quality reel with an all metal frame that I should consider instead for 20-30 lb. applications?

If your willing to go with a Makiara 10 you can get a IFGA cam for it that lowers the drag curve for light line fishing.
I have played with it in the past and it is set up for optimal drag in the 4-8 lb range. You will lose the high drag range
with this cam. I did look for it but it is not listed. If interested I can check with Okuma on availability.

texkan,

No the reel will do the job fine but for me with 30lb test and lower I don't see a need for a machined aluminum reel to get the job done. Frame flex on a reel and such with 30lb and under line will not be a problem so composite reels would be fine and will cost much less than machined reels. In the middle cost wise would be cast aluminum reels like the Penn Fathom.

When people are new to saltwater fishing some people reccomend the top of the line gear, which is not a bad thing but I on the other hand try to keep costs down for new people starting out until they have a better idea of the type of fishing they will be doing. Who knows maybe after 4 or 5 trips you may decide this type of fishing is not for you.

SoCalAngler:

Your rationale seems sound to me. Given that saltwater trips would likely be only 1-2 trips/year for me, purchasing a Cortez or even the Fathom would make better use of my fishing budget. Thanks for the input.

Don't forget about the Penn Squalls.
