Yeah, do that. He might have it just for show, but if that reel doesn't come with a cover plate, make sure you keep your fingers away from the gears while turning the handle. :-\

Interesting, but I wonder how the side casting will do without the benefit of a level winding mechanism?

A clever bit of engineering, but swivels work well too. Had a friend out fishing with me and he had borrowed his dad's reel that had been in the shed for 20 years with the original line. Trolled it out behind the boat and it got rid of the worst of the twist.
