TAKING THE SGUIDDER 140 A PART. HOW DO I GET THE SIDE COVER OFF I DID NOT WHAT TO DO ANY PRYING.

Use the chrome quick release knob on the head side.

Unscrew, pull out slightly (it is spring-loaded) -- slightly rotate the side plate -- and it will come right off.

Screws are on the inside.

Neat feature for a quick change out of spools.

Hello holeinthe water

That silver knob needs to be unscrewed to remove the side plate.  Alan Tani has a great tutorial on this reel.

I have one of these reels and it it great.

Good luck

GETTING IT CLEANED, SOME OF THE OLD GREASE DOES NOT WANT TO DESOLVE, EVEN IN MY UNTRISONIC CLEANER. SOAKING IT IN WD40 THEN CLEAN IT AGAIN. WHAT ABOUT THE DRAG WASHERS. HOW SHOULD I CLEAN THEM ?

Rancanfish

Good morning Hole-i-t-w.  I can't tell from your pics but is that the original drag stack?  If it were me I'd make sure I at least had HT-100 drag washers. Greased with Shimano drag grease then wiped down.

Definitely check out Alan's tutorial.
I woke today and suddenly nothing happened.

HOLEINTHEWATER

GOT IT CLEANED. THE WD40 AND SIMPLE GREEN AND ULTRASONIC CLEANER GOT THE OLD GREASE OFF. DON'T THINK THIS WAS HARDLY EVER USED.  ALL I'M GOING TO USE IT FOR IS FLATHEAD FISHING. STILL WON'T BE USED A LOT.

Alto Mare

Great job on that reel Dave, it looks new.
Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Nice work, Dave --

Get a few of these under your belt -- and you'll be a pro.

A true labor of love. Love to see the good old penns get a 2nd lease on life...good on ya !!!

Hard to imagine when the squidder was first introduced in 1939 that it cost $25.00.  In comparison a huge 6/0 senator the same year was $23.50 and the  9/0 senator was only $4.00 more than the squidder.....tells you how good that reel is, cause they sold tons of them thru over 50 years of production.
