half moon bay - 11/7/14

not much fishing this season.  this is only the second time i've had my boat out.  way too many things going on, just getting tugged in too many directions.  seems like everyone else is in the same situation, too.  well, we're taking a day off, knowing that it will put us three days behind, but boy was it nice to get out on the water!!!!!   ;D

5am!  we were supposed to go out of monterey for a run down to point sur, but the winds were predicted to hit 20 knots.  half moon bay was the back up.

we got there at 5:45am and quickly got the boat into the water.  good thing, because in 15 minutes there was a line of 6 boats behind me!

it was supposed to blow 6 to 9 knots all morning.  it started out calm enough for a 25 knot run down hill to san gregorio, but it started getting bumpy.  crew for the day consisted of harry franklin and roger shu to starboard, .....

.... and bryan young and ben tsutaoka to port.

i snuck in ahead of harry and stole this lingcod.  i used a really simple rig, consisting a 1/0 treble on a 3 foot leader with a whole squid and an 8 ounce weight on a slider.

roger stuck a nice one, not sure what he was using.

and harry finally got a ling, on a shrimp fly!

the starboard side of the boat was pretty hot.  not much happened to port, not sure why!  we finished out the day wiith 4 lings, 2 cabs, and 48 assorted rockfish.  we got bounced around pretty badly on the way back because the winds had really picked up.  i ended up running the motors all day.  i had at least one motor in slow idle reverse to slow down our drift.  it made for bouncy fishing.  still alot of fun.

we had a great time rockcod fishing.  everyone else is out for crab right now, but i never run pots off of my boat.  crab pots are really hard on a boat.  i'm happy enough just fishing for now.  thanks for coming along with us!  alan

Glad to see you got out. Btw, what was done that trailer, a beefier axle?
Thanks for sharing Alan, very nice.

Ouch is right Alan, that's a lot of dough ::). How did Bryan sneak in the pic? I didn't see him earlier. Maybe I had too much vino this evening :-\

The first rule of fishing is to fish where the fish are. The second rule of fishing is to never forget the first rule.

Sometimes, you just have to stop and smell the roses. ;)
Glad you and Bryan got out and caught some fish.  ;D

bryan came over a little while ago!  he was telling me that he was fine for the first part of the morning and then just hit a wall.  he got a little sea sick and was so exhausted that he just sat.  it was tough because we had to catch his fish for him!!!!   ;D

I had a good time, especially since I didn't have to work. :)

I was doing great, although all of my Lings were like 1/3 the size that Alan, Roger and Harry were catching.  I have to say, I have caught more lings on that day that equaled my entire life.

Caught a few nice sized blacks and blues.  Was grateful non the less.  Great guys fishing together...what else could you ask for?  Oh yeah, a little bit more energy. :D
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

Bryan,
I know you have had a rough time of it, health wise. You look like you are ready for bear in that picture. That is only the second one I have seen of you and it did my heart good seeing you out there with the guys. ;D
It doesn't get any better that that! The Boss out on the water with his right hand man! ;)

Nice report. Hello fish tacos! Glad you got out, Alan. I can't believe the season is over here with 16F degrees hitting us this weekend. I don't consider looking into a small hole in the ice as fishing. So I'm counting down to the winter solstice then spring thaw and ice out.

I got sidetracked as well with another hobby that absorbed too much fishing time. Next year better balance of allotted fun time.

I love fish tacos, really, more than I can tell you. But ling and cod require batter and hot oil with some long sliced potatoes right next to them. Hard to get better!

my daughter likes it best with egg, then italian bread crumbs, then deep fried.  can't argue with that!
