Noticed there is no bridge. The setup is very similar to more modern reels.

Are you sure? Doesn't that reel have a removable plate that everything sits on? I would call that a bridge :-\
Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

The side plate is the bridge.

Major Shame that Penn walked away from this, how about combining this right side plate design with the new USA senator's(AKA Baja)!
