Alan,

Do you have guidance on upgrading screws?  I am considering starting to replace the coated brass screws w/ stainless steel, primarily in Penns of various sorts.  I am considering getting a few boxes of screws and gradually starting to do this.

I'm curious as to your thoughts and experience on this (and others).  Particularly corrosion, or risk of stripping out brass female threads, etc.  Also looking for guidance as far as sizes:  are Penns all standard sizes, or do they have some metric mixed in?
Similar questions with Avet, maybe Daiwa (I would guess these are all metric but I have not cracked one open yet)
Or is Penn the only silly company using the coated brass screws?

Thanks again for the great site.  I am so impressed that you have a day job, a family, go fishing, AND fix all these reels.  You must have twice the energy I do!

you know, dylan, i was pretty gung ho to replace all of the screws with stainless steel at one point.  i've found that it is really not all that necessary.  stainless is definitely a good idea, but many threads are hard to come by.  many of the penn reels use a 5-40 thread.  also remember that there is a difference in pitch between asian metric and european metric threads.  mcmaster.com will give you an idea of what's out there.  alan

Does anyone know the screw diameter and thread pitch of the "end housing screw" on the Avet MX and SX series reels?  That's key #38 on the SX schematic:  http://www.avetreels.net/uploads/SX_5.3.pdf

Thanks.

Sorry I don't.  I just purchase them from Avet by the dozen
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

6-32 is my best guess.

it's a 32 for sure, because it matches the machine screws that i use for my handles.  it is clearly larger in diameter than the 5-40's that have laying around all over the garage.  it appears to be the same approximate diameter as the 6-40's that are used as bridge screws.

Alan, I think you are right.  None of my Philips head screwdrivers is quite right for those screws, and so I am going to replace them in my reels.  Thanks.

What about the rod clamp screws for Senator reels?
10-24?
