Reviving a dead 430SS (4/22/15 IT LIVES!)

With some luck I'll be able to bring life back to this hopeless looking 430SS. My uncle gave me this reel when I was probably 11 or 12 years old (25 now) and after a few uses I remember it just seizing up and i threw it in my storage bucket with other broken down reels. Upon inspecting the internals there isn't much corrosion and most parts can be saved. The bail assembly,drag washers/knob and probably other stuff will need to be bought.

Biggest issues are the pinion bearing seems to be frozen/stuck to the frame, which keeps me from getting the shaft/stripped pinion gear out...if anyone has suggestions on getting it out while minimizing chances of damaging the reel I'd appreciate it. Aloha!

This is what I'm starting with...but as we all know. most of the time with some elbow grease and replacement parts a USA Penn reel can be fixed.
If I can get it there mechanically I'll sand blast the frame/rotor for a fresh respray :]

But here's where it gets bad...Bearing retaining ring is out, bearing is frozen to the frame! It is spinning freely though!


And...i believe this would be a stripped Pinion gear......

Hi Yogi --

Soak the bearing area in vinegar overnight --

If not coming loose yet -- drip penetrating oil into the area liberally where the bearing outside contacts the reel body -- maybe overnight again.

Then, using a soft block of wood, and a crescent wrench -- reattach the nut that attaches to the pinion, and holds the rotor in place.  Get the wrench under the nut -- and just slowly leverage it up.

If the bearing is still stuck to the pinion after removal -- just drill a hole in a piece of wood -- Insert the pinion -- place another piece of wood on the pinion -- and hit it with a hammer -- it will come loose with no damage to either the pinion, or the bearing.  Put a soft container under where the pinion will fly down.

Very good advice. I had the same problem with my Penn 430SS.

Your pinion is likely perfectly fine. If I recall correctly that type of worm drive does not have sharp teeth on them. The stainless pinion is far harder than the brass main gear. Very unlikely to strip the harder metal.

Could be wrong, but after you get the pinion bearing out see what you got.

Are you able to remove the cross wind arm?  If not, I would put the spool sleeve back in, told the spool sleeve, lubricate the cross wind arm where it joins the shaft then twist slowly back and forth until it breaks free.

Some progress...really had to hammer the pinion bearing out as there was a tiny bit of corrosion between it at the body really seizing it together. I managed to cause some chips around the edges but some JB Weld and sanding should fix that. This is the most beat up Penn I have and common sense would say "You have a Conflict 2500 and Battle 2000, why bother with this POS"...But being that I've got a soft spot for SS reels...I can't just left it die!

The pinion bearing is definitely still good, just some light sanding with fine-grit wet/dry to get any crud off.




Pinion gear should slide over the shaft right? Nope in this case they are VERY much frozen into 1 piece...with some massaging the shaft might be salvagable, but i mangled the pinion with vice grips trying to free the pinion bearing.

Yogi, I'm not crazy about pliers and hammers in the beginning, the parts need to soak a little longer, that reel is really frozen.

When I posted it here, on the site the first time, most made fun that it was a cordless tool cleaner. I use it often and its the only cleaner I would use. it won't damage seals, paint or anything else, but it gets the job done. Works on bearings like magic, no smell and no mess.
If you wanted to give it a shot, in your case you would want to place the parts in a ziplock bag or a tupperware container with lid, it would evaporate quickly if you didn't.
Spray the parts really good and let them soak for a little while.
Every now and then, nothing will work, I hope that's not the case here.

On another note, don't compare that little reel to any others, they haven't made a reel in the same size better than the 430ss yet.
This one was forgotten, that's why its in such a shape.

Sal, don't worry I plan on getting this little reel working again pretty soon. 11/12 year old me had no clue about reel maintenance other than washing it down after a trip and this is what came of it, unfortunately. I truly love all the USA SS spinfishers as many Hawaii anglers do. The 430SS is completely dissembled and I'm just figuring out what parts need to be ordered/sourced. Hopefully it'll be back out on the water throwing lures at 1-5lb jacks when it's done.

I will stop by homedepot tomorrow for a can of that degreaser! Much Aloha, this community is amazing!

Also is the bail assembly on the 430SS unique to the model or would a 4300SS bail fit too? Thanks!

All the needed replacement parts came in and I assembled her today! The once dead and forgotten 430SS lives again. Still have a new shaft coming in but was able to free the frozen pinion on the original to get it working right now. For now I'm leaving off the auto-trip for the bail since I prefer to close it manually. There's still come cosmetic stuff to take care of but mechanically she's great. Considering this reel sat in a spare parts bucket for probably 12+ years I'm stoked on the result so far. When I have time I'll strip the old paint and probably use Duracoat to respray. So so happy to get this awesome little reel working again and hopefully bringing fish in soon. Thanks and Aloha for the advice and encouragement!

No need to change drag to HT-100 is you are already using Carbontex from SmoothDrag.  There will be no difference in your drag performance.

Okay so duracoat is a bit pricier than anticipated.....what products (rattle-can primer and paint) have been the most successful for a durable finish around salt water. For prep I can either just go with wet sanding and if needed I can access a bead blaster (seems like sand blasting would be too agressive for these). Aloha
