Some of you know I have a 3.5 yo Grandson.
This little guy came along when I was at an all time low in my life.
He figuratively and Miss Mari believes, literally saved my life.
He started fishing with me as soon as he could hold a rod, about 2 years old.
He adopted his Daddy's, my 24 yo sons,  first rod and reel and since this little combo has never been torn down and serviced I thought "Why Not?"
So here it is "The Tazmanian Devil Special" Which just happens to describe both my Son and my Grandson to a T.
There is nothing like lying flat on your back on the deck, alone except for the helmsman aft at the wheel, silence except for the lapping of the sea against the side of the ship. At that time you can be equal to Ulysses and brother to him.

As you can see in the third pic this baby has endured being used and abused.
I actually took it apart outside and dumped about a half a pound of sand in my driveway.
I guess that's what happens when you throw a rod and reel into 4 foot surf at Scotts Beach!
In these next couple of pics you see not only the sand but the dreaded hardened brown grease and because I don't know the chemical makeup of the plastic I am going to just use Simple Green and hot water to do the clean up.

Now we see the disassembled reel and various components.
Surprisingly little wear or corrosion. The internal metal parts were well coated with hard grease.
A liberal spray of The Green and a hot water bath.
It is hard to see but in the pic of the spool it looks like the rim is abraded but this is actually a little furry strip glued to the spool that helps to control the line when casting out.
Make sure when you service these little spincast reels that you wash this area well with warm water as the fur tends to trap fine sand.

I used Cals throughout as I didn't know if the Yamaha Blue or TSI 321 would harm the plastic.
A good coat on all parts including the single drag washer!
Don't forget a little dot of grease in the interior of the release trigger and the spring and pin of the take-up spool.

And Wallahh! My first tutorial!
Drag is much smoother and it doesn't feel like half of Scotts beach is inside when reeling line in!

Hey, Jon --

He is close to the age to step up to a little better rod and reel.

When you feel it is appropriate -- bring him over, and we will let him pick out a rod and reel with your guidance that he will have all his life.

Always glad to start kids out with a rod, reel, and tackle box full of wonders.

Best,

Fred

Fred has indeed touched us all with his generosity. There are many others here that have the same spirit of help and giving as well, that's what makes this community so great to be a part of.
