Ok, that eliminates the dog, clicker, etc..

This leaves the possibility of a wear issue with the 2 speed shift mech/main gear interface.  Check to make sure the '62-Shaft Fork' mates cleanly with the slots cut in the '66-Drive Shaft' and '64-Pusher', i.e. no noticable play.  Also check that the gears themselves mate cleanly with the shaft fork.  Just remove the right plate, and grab onto the gear set while replicating the issue with the handle.  If you can't replicate the problem here..then it is not the 2-speed mech.

Just got back from my shop.  All of my Avet EX reels do this, it's AR dog ratchet backlash and not a problem.
Hi, my name is Lee and I have a fishing gear problem.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

:D

Guess I was overthinking this one.  At least you know you've got a solid AR system.

A little grease on the dog might quiet it up a bit.

And you are not the only one.  I've never back reeled mine so I never noticed it.

I checked the part numbers listed, very little to no play.  My only concern is the sound is there with the dogs removed, would that not stop it if it was the problem.  Tried grease last night, maybe not enough!  As long as other reels do it I'm not too worried.  At least now I've gone through all the possibilities mentioned and am satisfied they are all ok.  Thank you very much for the help.

Just a quick follow up.  The clanking noise went away once the reel was spooled up.  I guess the sound was just magnified by the lack of anything to dampen it.  Thanks again for all the suggestions, it set my at ease once I checked out all the ideas and didn't find any issues.  Just got back from vacation and caught our fist shark on the reel.  Thanks again!
