John - One can learn wonderful things from the locals by keeping an open mind, a closed mouth, and showing respect for local ways and customs rather than barging in spouting about how things are done "back home" or how you know better.  In this way, you have become more like kama'aina than malihini.  The world would be a better place if everyone did that.  Good on you!        Aloha,  lawaia
