Hi all. First post, and I'm pretty much a noob when it comes to reel servicing, but I have confidence, and I'm not afraid to ask even basic questions. As an example;

Is the left side plate for a 113HLW the same as the left side plate for a 113H?

I bought 8 Penns from a guy on CL, (4 113's, 2 114's, 2 330gti's), and they all need serious cleaning/servicing. The HLW had a broken left side plate (my wife thinks he was mad and smashed it :o), and I was hoping I could use a side plate from one of the other 113H's for it.

Hello Beefer,

Yes the Left Side Plates are the same, however, there is an old model and a new model of the side plate. If you review the description in the product page of the two parts, the identifier is the center bearing hole. That will tell you which one you need. If you have an old style plate, you would need to replace the plate AND the bearing.

New Bearing ( If you had old plate and need to switch to old plate ): https://www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Parts/40-113HL.aspx

Unfortunately, the entire center of the plate is gone. What I'm left with is basically a ring about 1/2" thick sticking out from the chrome rings. It's really like he smashed it hard, and the center broke out. Any other way to know? Would the spool have something different between the two different types of plates?

You may want to try one of your 113 sideplates to see if it fits your 113HLW.  You can compare the sideplate that fits with the one on Scott's Bait, then buy what you need.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

the side plates should all fit just fine, old h and new hl.  sometimes these spools are loaded with wire that weighs a ton.  that's the only way i could see a spool busting through a side plate.  a simple fall could result in that kind of damage if the spool is that heavy.  can imagine getting that angry.

I have a feeling it was something more violent then being loaded with wire. It's loaded about 40-50% with about 20lb mono. I'd guess the line broke during a fight, and he bashed the rod/reel. Oddly enough, the outer ring looks fine.

This seems to be the way this guy cared/cares for his stuff. Sad, really.

i might have an extra if you need one.  bryan is finding all kinds of things in the garage.  i needed a side plate for a tld 30 two speed and found one that bryan pulled out just this evening.  now if i could just find a cam for a single speed tld 20!

Alan, I think I saw some TLD cams.  Not sure if they were to 2-speed or single.  It's probably in the shimano bin on the work bench seat.  Of course, you'd have to go digging.  I'll be there this afternoon to help if you cannot find it.
