Thanks.

Smaller with less line capacity but a tough reel never the less. with those upgrades is even better.

Joe

Actually, Joe, the upgraded spool IS a 29L-100...the Surfmaster's spool...so same capacity.

I would say the gears on the 100 are a little beefier, but both will get the job done.
Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

:al My dream reel if I can find the parts. I noticed you have a SS gear sleeve but a brass dog. Did you change the dog to SS? How did you find the Tiburon frame when you hooked a YT? Did the frame torqued or the side plates can handle the punishment?

Hi, my name is Lee and I have a fishing gear problem.

I have all of the answers, yup, no, maybe.

That brass dog was replaced with an SS one from Lee (his last one unless he made more since). There was no torque what so ever (certainly not at 12lbs drag); the plates held up just fine. Since my original post, have landed dorado and YFT...schoolie BFT is still on the bucket list for the 27.

Wai, this was the height of my reel craziness and build excitement.  I have my version stashed somewhere (grey plates and a Accurate frame).

I miss the days when we were constantly building and testing reels. I have so many 'built' reels that aren't being used. At least I still feel the crazy part.

I always trusted your field tested expertise. So thanks for being an unrecognized 'sensei' for us all. (And my bro from another mo, lol.)
I woke today and suddenly nothing happened.

I know the feeling Randy, I have so many reels I've built that have never left the house. Someday I hope to fish them all
Do what you can with that you have where you are

How far are you away from offshore fishing...would think you might have jumped on to the Albacore?

I have stopped "building" additional reels several years ago and have transitioned to "fishing" the ones I have. Only when I have hit a specific milestone that I am allowing myself to consider a new reel.

This past July was the night drop, triple-digit BFT (~115 lbs) on a modded Daiwa 600H...did it, not going to do it again, so I'm finally allowing myself to get a 2-spd 100lb reel.

Keta

The shelf is further from the coast at Brookings than farther north but I saw jumping albacore right out side of the harbor in 1978.

PLEASE build out a Monofil. The pimping is scarce around here these days.

Surfrat

Porthos,
Thanks for letting me know you added SS dogs. I have been looking for 27 reels but I might have caused the price to jump again since posting here. The 27 is an interesting reel built like the 180.

I have been fishing my Blackfish Special until I got excited to add a double dog.  :P

Surfrat, Beachmaster 155/160 and Surfmaster 100/150/200 share a lot of parts with Monofils. Surfy gears are same as Squidder. Unless you are just hunting colored reels, you will get similar performance.

Surfrat

I can't find an affordable 27 but found a $3.25 surfmaster to take its place. Since it got the 200 pinion and 60 main gear, I can work with it. ::)

thorhammer

Any Penn is worth 3.25 just for the screws!!!
