So my best friend came across an old man at his job who he works with. He showed the old man his nice Penn 114HL and how clean and nice it was blah blah blah. The old man tells him "what you plan to use that for?". My friend replied "it's for shark fishing." The old man had chuckled and said "Your not landing any kind of monster on that. I have a setup at home that was my son in law's setup back when he fished." So I get the call and he tells me that this guy is selling him a bigger reel Senator and rod. I asked him... "Do you know what size senator it is?". He replied "well in the picture he showed me it looks big... maybe a 12/0".. I asked him how much and he told me the guy hadn't gave him a price yet. I said **** it go check it out and see.

My friend calls me the day after and tells me "I took the rod and reel from the old man." I said "So what did you get?" He tells me...

"Its a Penn Senator 16/0 with a Harnell Rod on full Mildrum roller guides with a Varmac RS6H Reel seat."

I was like "WTH dude thats a crazy, vintage, bad ***, all kinds of setup" LOLOL. "So what did you pay?"

I collapsed..... He tells me "$100".

I got so mad at him for finding a deal like this because that will never come across again.. or maybe in a zillion years.

Anywho I serviced, cleaned, and upgraded the senator. It was pristine Inside before and moreso after, and gorgeous outside once I touched it up...

BEFORE!!!!!!

Reel Seat and Clamp before I cleaned it to show how the rest of the reel turned out..

Cleaned Reel Seat and Clamp

INTERNALS WHICH APPEARED IN GREAT SHAPE BESIDES A LACK OF GREASE

HERE IS THE INTERNALS... I DONT KNOW IF THAT IS A SS MAIN GEAR OR JUST PLATED BUT NONETHELESS I UPGRADED THE REEL WITH TOM H'S SS SLEEVE AND  UPGRADED TO A CARBON FIBER DRAG SETUP.

AFTER!!!!

AND HERE A VIDEO OF THE RESTORED 2 PC ROD. SORRY NO BEFORE PICS..

HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS AS MUCH AS I DID..

Well that's certainly a rare deal and what a great job cleaning and restoring the setup looks like it's brand new.
Very nice your friend is indeed a lucky man, and you got to clean it up and make it perfect and dependable!
Hope he gets some good fish on it.

Nice job!  I love finding those deals on the big senarors, ND restoring and upgrading them.  I am sure your friend will be happy with the results.  I have a similar rod to the one you have there, that came with an old 14/0.
Hope springs eternal
for the consumate fishermen.

Shark Hunter

Beautiful Setup!
I would at least take Him and his wife to Dinner.
16/0's are getting harder to find in that shape.
The Harnell is the topper!

Thanks guys.. I'm still stoked about the whole thing.. Nonetheless a good find..

Thanks to this site and the good people here that I've learned to work on the reels I've done so far.. Can only give back by sharing what I've done and help some..

BTW this setup whom belonged to the son in law was a famous shark fisherman known here in south Florida named Rene De Dios.. Very well known on southflorida shark club..

Awesome deal there or should I say steal?  ::)

Yogi_fish808

Amazing deal! You're friend got the steal of a lifetime. I can only imagine how badass 16/0sa would be if they made a 1pc frame for it!

Your friend stepped in the proverbial pooh.
You did a nice job sprucing her up.
Tell your friend to play the lotto.

Very nice job detailing that antique. By style of handle I would date it 60's to 70's era, but most likely 60's with that deep blood red color nob with no streaks. I'd value that reel at easy $800...just the reel. Yep, that's a score of a lifetime !!

Personally, I would shelf that 50 year old survivor and get a crusty used one to fish with.  ;) ;)

This last, let's not tell my wife that :)

The 16/0 is the Monster of Big Senators. If you have one, you have a problem.
Personally, I have two. Anyone here that has one of these, Needs to post it up.
I will start a new thread in the Senator Section. Show your 16/0!

Daron, I don't have a problem, but I do think every fisherman and woman should have a "jaws" combo rod & reel.

Personally, I do have one 16/0 with stand-up 130lb class old fenwick. The reel is impressive by itself, but add a unlimited rod and that's when the men get separated from the boys. Looking forward to your thread Daron. Hope I can find a way to post mine on your thread.
