Help - Would a backwards anti reverse clutch render the reel unusable or rough?

I am putting an Abu Garcia soron stx 40 spinning reel (very similar to the cardinal) back together, servicing after 7 months of use. I am unable to find an image of the correct placement of the anti reverse casing - the metal part with an outline that looks like a circular saw blade (I hope that makes sense) imagining it as a saw blade I have placed it cutting clockwise when looking down on the reel from the spool end - the same direction as the rotor spins, clockwise.  It appears to work properly but feels a little Rough winding in and silky smooth winding backwards. could this eggbeater feeling be normal based on the shape of the gears or a sign that I have got something wrong?    I am assuming that I have placed it properly...  and that if I took it apart again and reversed the casing I would unable to use my reel properly CORRECT? or could it potentially become silky smooth on the retrieve instead?                here is an image of a kind of similar part , in the same direction as I have placed it.  http://www.alanhawk.com/reviews/card8/21.jpg  although in my case it is possibe be fitted both directions.  any advice greatly appreciated.

Maybe it needs to be reversed.

Fundamentally, this type of clutch is "switchable" to allow the AR to be turned on or off. If you are able to back reel at all then it is "off". It should only function as an anti-reverse when it is switched "on". It should be perfectly smooth when "on" with little to no back play.

It sounds like you could have a mis-positioned roller or it could be upside down. Perhaps Foakes has some experience with this but systematic trial and error will sort you out eventually.

I was expecting you to answer this one -- your the expert, not me!

However, John is right -- a little trial, fitting, and error.

First, make sure the two parts of the clutch are completely evacuated, clean, and dry.

If no burrs or issues observed with a magnifying glass on either of the nylon/plastic clutch parts -- and no weird wear on the roller bearings -- then fit the rollers back in carefully, use TS321 oil or similar, making sure they seat and turn freely.

This process may take a few times -- because the rollers wear in a certain direction, and will make a slight grinding sometimes if placed in a new position in the line-up.

The oil and proper seating helps -- if only one roller is catching -- that is enough to cause the rough running.

Well it is back up and running! just no solid hookups out fishing today. thanks for your advice guys I took it apart ... reluctantly after the trauma of splashing a spring down a handbasin - rescued after a lot of  heartache, it wasnt easy! but the assembly gets easier every time I must say  .  reversed the clutch casing, and sure enough I could only wind backwards with the anti reverse on which left me taking it apart again tried turning the inside sleeve the other way and cleaning up those bearings.  I cant say it is smoother for sure but I feel a lot better about the situation having taken the challenge to pull it apart again. there was a bit of wear on the outer sawblade shaped piece chrome stripped away to a copper colour.   At least one review I have read mentioned the reel was not as smooth as the buyer had expected but it was liked.   I use it for catching Kahawai (translation - strong in the water) spinning 25g lures it will be a hard working reel. What parts should I expect to replace first? Im guessing the line roller, the WHOLE drive train even if only one piece fails, the anti reverse clutch, and any other rough bearings I suppose.   Thanks again, now Ill have more confidence stripping my Penn slammer liveliner, then Ill give the Penn spinfisher V a go
