Dominick

Hi everyone.  Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  I purchased a couple of Christmas presents for myself.  I thought I would share with the group the reels that will go into my collection.  The collection that will be organized some day.  But first here is a photo of some Christmas decorations sent to me by Big Tim.

They look great as Christmas decorations huh?

I bid for this little guy on Ebay.  I saw it and it was $20.00 with free shipping.  I took one look at the lighthouse engraving and jumped on it.

It was dirty but I was able to see through the dirt that this was a nice specimen.  I was surprised when it came.  apparently the lady selling the reel felt bad about the dirt and wiped it clean.  What you see is the way I received it.

Here is the piece de resistance.  I purchased this from one of our members.  You all can probably guess who it was.  He's the guy that always posts photos of pristine reels.  If you can't guess I'll give you the answer in a later post on this thread.  A pristine 12/0.

Here it is next the tiny Penn 180.

Leave the gun.  Take the cannolis.

There are two things I don't like about fishing.  Getting up early in the morning and boats.  The rest of it is fun.

Holy cow, Dom.  One for the bait, one for the fish.   ;D

Nice Dominick, Santa was good to you this year ;).
You probably don't remember, but if you look around you should find another 180. I gave you and Joe one when you stopped by. ;D Joe might be a 160, I don't remember.
I knew you were getting that 12/0, the sender was right, it is gorgeous...very nice.

Merry Christmas to you Linda and the rest of your lovely family.

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

I thought I recognized that 12/0.. she's a looker.  Looks like it would make a beautiful centerpiece for the Christmas dinner.  Then again, it may be a bit more comfortable on the mantle with its siblings ;)

I think those little Penn reels are a bit underrated.  The fact that they produced alot of them really shows that Penn was on the cutting edge of the fishing industry market at this time.  They are well balanced, no nonsense little reels that brings the notion of light-tackle sportsfishing to the masses at a very reasonable price point.  I have a 180 with a balsa strip glued to the arbor (tournament style upgrade?), and a 185 with the marbled plastic spool.  These little guys sure clean up nice :)

Hope springs eternal
for the consumate fishermen.

I agree John.
Some other  little jewels are the 9 and 109, you could usually grab them on line in great shape for less than $30.
I think the 9 in red is the sharpest looking reel of its size. I like them so much that I grabbed a few new ones ;).
Now back to Dminick's Reel Christmas.

I think those little rounded amber handles on the older small Penns are outstanding.

It never ceases to amaze me how well these Penns work after 80 years and a little TLC.

Too bad we have gone to reels that are too complicated for no reason, made of composites and plastics, parts that are unrepairable or unavailable.

The fish haven't changed much -- we have.

Anything good under the tree?

Merry Christmas to you and your family, Dominick.

All the Best,

Fred, Alan Tani was not around 80 years ago, that's the reason.

Merry Christmas Dom.
