Love all the info that ended up in the thread. It really does look like a modified Avalon or pre-Avalon.

I can't really tell from my reference book
Sal
Sal, which book might that be? If you've got it, I'm putting it on my list!

none of the Pflueger's I've seen have a "gear in gauge" lever
I'm not really following this - I don't see any lever or anything on this old knuckle buster. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding?

Sid there is no lever to engage, it's a true knuckle buster.

It seems the Avalon could have come directly from Pflueger with the bells and whistles.
I have an old Four Bros reel with the same anti-reverse mechanism (I'm assuming it came with this, that may be incorrect, not sure how to tell if it's an aftermarket add-on), and since Four Bros reels pre-date Pflueger (in name), I'm not surprised to find this on an early Pflueger reel. It also has the Williams drag. I'll not post a photo here so as not to hijack this thread.

Here you go Sid:
Fishing tackle antiques and collectables : reference and evaluation of pre-1960 tackle

I have a couple of more, but don't feel like looking for them in the attic.

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Thanks, Sal. Found a used copy in good condition on Amazon for $14 including shipping.
