Sid, yep. I just finished breaking it down... I've seldom seen anything as sorry, it's as if some total idiot poured used motor oil into the works, used it to pound nails into concrete, and then left it submerged in the bay for a month.
   >:(

That is all true, Aiala...However, what other reel in the world (or ever produced) can take that kind of treatment -- and be restored to a capable and useful reel?

I have absolute confidence that in your skilled hands -- you will bring this Lazarus back to beautiful condition.

Look forward to pics.

Good work!

Best,

Fred

Thor, in due course I'll post pics of the whole procedure, but meantime just to give you an idea:

This poor reel!  :-[

Well I guess it's better then to be left dry & rusty. It's easier to clean up oil & grease then rust & corrosion. Time for the rubber gloves & toothbrush.

Maxed Out

Ha ha, no shortage of grease.

Love those old steel gears  :o

Aiala, you can do it. Keep the Faith! ;)
When I get one in that bad of shape, I skip right by my normal cleaners.
I put all the parts in a small bucket and pour in Coleman Fuel.
Swish it around a little bit and let it sit for a few minutes.
Then get out the brush and gloves.
Wala! Mess Gone.
Just be careful, as it is highly flammable. Dries quickly and doesn't stink as bad as Brake Cleaner.
Pour it back into the container and seal it up because it evaporates quickly. Just my way.
Quick and Effective.

So, just wondering, how well did the wrench fit over the crank nut? Maybe the problem I've been having is only with the smaller reels and the smaller end of the wrench....???? My largest reel is a 6/0, and that's the only time I've used the larger end of the wrench, and come to think of it, I'm pretty sure it fit just right on the larger nut...

I think I mis-spoke. I think my 49 uses both ends of the wrench....

Maybe we should nominate Ailia for Vet of The Year...after reading Dominicks response about feeling like a vet after rescuing a dog of a reel....BILL.   ;D....
It may not be very productive,
but it's sure going to be interesting!

The 114H is a heck of a reel.
It is heavy, but it has a lot of groceries in a small package compared to the bigger Senators.
When you pick one up, you can just tell, This reel means business.
One of my favorites.
