It wasn't long ago a friend popped over with a goody bag of reel bits. The reels were totally disassembled and thrown into a bag and forgotten about. My friend isn't one for delving into reels so he passed the task (buck) on to myself.

The goody bag contained numerous Abu parts and it was time consuming laying them out to first make sure the necessary parts could complete assembly. There were 4 differing reels but only enough parts to complete 2. Once cleaned, lubed and reassembled, jobs a good'un. These Abu reels are simplicity in itself so it was no hard task, especially when parts are so interchangeable between this brand. All in all it was good fun and having received a few ciders as a thank you token was good enough!

Now, think about how many folks in the world could do that from those parts? -- outside of Alan's site experts.

Not many, I would expect.

I call those "Coffee Can Reels".

Generally the wife drops them off at the front door, in a coffee can -- saying something like "My husband hasn't had the time to put this back together, has gotten frustrated, and there may be a few bits missing".

No problem -- glad to help, Maam.

Then call them when it is done -- no embarassment, no drama -- just business as usual -- and everyone is happy.  Just like doing a puzzle.

Good job!

Cool Beans there Fred...I like the "puzzle' analogy....you know (mostly) all th parts are there, just a matter of piecing it together....kinda like the MOPAR cars, "Miscellaneous Oddball Parts Assembled At Random".....Bill
It may not be very productive,
but it's sure going to be interesting!

Great Job there Fish-aholic!
I love building and finding them like this.
I always lay everything out as you did, then tell my wife to put it together. :D

Coffee Can Reels. :D

The last time I received a coffee can reel I made a fundamental school boy error. I was told all parts were bagged up, so in blind faith I began servicing said reel instead of first laying the parts out and checking them off against a schematic. Yup, I cleaned all parts, serviced all bearings to find upon assembly a key part missing from the eccentric rendering the reel useless. With the baitcasting reel discontinued with no spares to be found (Penn Generation V55), I deservedly slapped my own forehead and got taught a lesson that I won't be repeating again.
