These are six reels that have not been fished in many years. I will be fishing the two newels and the YT special this July on a 7 day trip. I needed a lot of 25-50 lb set ups to be used by others. Thanks to this site for the knowledge, advice and parts!

Top left is a Penn YT special. For this reel, I got a newer topless frame, SS gear sleeve, 7 stack drag and Tiburon lite handle. It has 475 yds. of hollow 80 spectra and will fish a 40 lb top shop at 13 lbs drag.

Lower left is a Newell 332-5. This one got a handle and 5 stack drag from Bryan and a new set of spool bearings from Dawn. Spooled with 450 yards of 40 hollow ace for a 30 lb. floro top-shot with 10 lbs of drag.

Top row middle is a Newell G440-F. This one got a topless frame from Tiburon and a handle / 5 stack drag from Bryan. A new set of spool bearings from Dawn. Spooled with 550 yards of 40 hollow ace for a 30 lb. floro top-shot with 10 lbs of drag to be used with 8 foot Calstar jig stick.

The other three are original Trinidads. I was surprised when I tor these down for service in that as old as they are, they had double dogs AND ARB!

Because all schematics are easily downloaded and mostly because, EVERY REEL I am servicing has a write up on this site, I am just finishing up full tear downs /  servicing / upgrading on the other 24 regular reels used for two long range set ups for my son and I. I will post photos once completed. Just waiting on the return of a 30T frame that is getting re-anodized after I made it into a topless frame! All I used was a dremmel, sand paper and file!

Thank you again to all who contribute to this site.

Thanks Fred,

I have been having a lot of fun and I am really anxious to fish these old timers!

Interestingly, out of 30 reels, most of which are modern high end reels, the two best at coasting after spin-up are the Penn YT and the Newell 332 with the 440 a close second!  They beat everything else by a long margin! This includes new Dauntless reels with spool sleeve and TS 301 in all spool bearing on all reels.

Both Newells are graphite spools while the Penn is an aluminum spool from Tiburon.

Sorry for misleading you. Only my TN40 has double dogs. Both the TN 16 and TN 20 have single with ARB.

still amazing, tn40 has only one dog, tn50 is the one with double dogs from the factory.

the double dog job that was performed on the tn40 could be done on the tn30, tn20 and tn16

Gary, great work! I'm very interested in the topless frame re-anodize project; can you start a thread on that? who is doing it? whats the cost etc?

thanks!

Nice work, Gary. I noticed you had the Wiha master set of screwdrivers... what do you think of them. I was gonna pull the trigger the other day.
Thanks

I like the set. However the handles do not give me enough torque for setting side plate screws etc. It is really nice to have a handle on each tool. If you pull the trigger, do not waste money getting the yellow ESD version for static free applications!

When I go on long range trips I carry the Wiha  50 piece multi bit set. It gives you pretty much everything you need for a full rebuild on the boat and is self contained in a small package.

If you really are seriously disturbed and have a tool disorder like I do, look at their Torque Control self contained sets! 59 pieces for ONLY $556, this is less than $10 per piece. After all, how long has it been since you got a piece for less than $10?

OK John,

The modified frame went out yesterday for re-anodization. I did take some before photos so I will post once I get is back. This is an old two speeded Cal Sheets blue printed reel that had a top frame bar and a lot of sentimental value. Since they no longer offer a topless frame, I just cut up the original using a tib 50S topless frame as an example of what to cut and what to leave. It will end up fishing 500 yards of 130 hollow spectra with 100 lb floro wind on. Drag at 34 pounds with long freespool thanks to Cal Sheets many years ago. Same as before, but now it will be a lot more fisherman friendly without the top bar.

Nice work Gary.  Good to see that you put the parts that I sent to good use.

Can't wait to hear about your long range trip.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

Nice work on those reels Gary! The vast info available to us here makes a huge difference when it comes to making sure our reels are performing their 100% best. Aloha and tight lines!

Great job, I have a few friends that love the Trinidad's, to the point they have multiples of each size as back ups and claims of 'owning forever....favorite reel...I'll never fish anything else...etc".  Thanks for sharing and good luck on your trip!
