Penn 113hlw free spool lever problem

Aloha gangy, so I have a penn 4/0 and there's a problem with the lever that switches between free spool and retrieve. It seems that when There's no tension on the spool the lever switches fine. But as soon as there's tension it seems that the lever is stuck, like I physically can't pull the lever into free spool. Has this happened to anyone?

When you have tension on the spool you also have tension on the pinion in the spool so you are fighting the friction of the pinion in the spool trying to pull the pinion out of the spool.    Rudy
