I have a TLD Star 20/40S that has only been used once or twice.  I've replaced the handle with one I like better then the original and plan on replacing the drags with Carbontex drags from Smooth drag.  Otherwise everything else is original.

My question is: what is the maximum line test braid that the reel could reasonably handle?  Could it handle 50 lb braid?

I use a 30-40# leader with 50# spectra so 10-13# drag. A TLD 20/40 should be good for that.

It isn't what pound line you use it's a matter of what the max poundage line the factory recommends. The drag should be set no higher then 1/3 of max line poundage the manufacturer says to use. Anything above that you are on your own. So you can run any pound test you want (even 200# test) but stay within the max drag for the heaviest line the factory recommends.
