Not that familiar with these reels, so ?
1. Is a 454 comparable to a Penn 113H
2.Gear ratio and line capacity ?
3. Price for new in box ?

I know Bryan is a PG guy and am looking forward to input. I am considering a purchase ... Then maybe a Newell

It's a narrowed 4/0. 300 yds of 40# is smaller than a 4/0 or YTS.  More like a Baja Special, 113hn.

I'm by no means an expert.  I just love those solid reels.

The 454 came with 4:1 gear ratio.

I've seen new in box go for $200 to $375.  Depends on someone's want list, color,... for sure.
:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

How much drag can they comfortably fish ?

The internals are the same as a 113h with all the stainless  and drag upgrades available.

Is there bearing support for the handle ? Gears also ?....Jeff

Hi Jeff,

The reel is essentially a narrow PENN 113H. Stock gears were 4:1 instead of 3.25:1 though.

Actually, I'm almost certain that the 4xx series Newells have Jigmaster drags (a three stack of 006 309), not 113H drags (a 5 stack of 006 113H).

454 came with a 3 stack of 4/0 drags but thanks to Bryan they can have a 5 stack mine has a Accurate 4/1 and a 5 stack, it's a great reel.

Thanks to Bryan, they can have a 7 stack or they can have one of the various inserts, A stock Penn 5 stack also fits . Remember, we're talking Pro Gear, not Newell
