A buddy saw the 4/0 build I did and wants me to do his 112H2H. I couldn't find this specific model in a forum search. If it's worth the upgrades, I have a budget of 150.00 for parts.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

With a 150 budget. I would go with a tib frame, BP ss gears, ss gear sleeve, and ss dog. Might as well go for the ss yoke and jack

Here's a pic of mine. If I remember correctly it has all ss guts except  for the bridge.

stainless steel gear sleeve and a jigmaster power handle at most.  don't dump alot of money into this reel.  :-\

Alan, forgive my lack of knowledge, but what makes this reel undesirable for a big upgrade job? The number of Senator variations is mind boggling.

I really enjoyed the 4/0 build, but I have a lot to learn about Senators and when to build and when to pass one by.

Thanks for your patience.

Or just service the reel, and fish it.

John,

Thanks for the links. I'm going to pass along the info to the owner and see what he decides to do. In fairness, I think I'll tell him that for 150, a Penn Fathom 25 appears to be a lot of reel out of the box. A drag and sleeve upgrade would probably make a world of difference.

Tightlines the man is talking about a 112H 3/0 not a 113H 4/0. As Alan said ss gear sleeve, ss dog, AT or Adams power handle, AT knob. That's all under $100 & saves him $50 for bait.

No problem.  Alan and you b9th have good points.  For the m9ney.. sell the reel and spend the money on a fathom.

BTW.. I like your avatar  :)

Thank you. Biggest barracuda on fly. Caught it in Belize. One of the best fights I've ever had on a long rod.

if money is not an option, go for it!  i just always worry about the guys that are on a limited budget.

I really like this reel. I think the 4.8:1 SS gears are worth it. Especially with a drag upgrade, the 4:1 isn't slow enough for winching and I can't get a knife jig to work right at that speed either.

Going further into the backstory....

This guy is my truck mechanic, an avid fisherman, and gear head. I think he sees the mechanical potential in these old reels just like we do. I think having a custom reel is very appealing to a guy like him BUT he likes to fish for sharks, nearshore, from a 20' boat. I've been reading on here for the last 4 hours and just don't think this is the right reel to hot rod for the job. For a little more dough, a Fathom or Okuma Andros single speed is better out of the box as I can build this one. If it was a 113 or 114H, I think I could make him really happy with a 150 dollar budget.

Heck, he's buying a an Okuma Solterra 20 from me, and if you've ever cracked one of those open, it's a whole lotta reel for the money.

I hate to turn it away because it would have been a fun project, but it's probably the right thing to do. Thank you all for the feedback.

Shark Hunter

The 112H is the smallest of the high speeds Pat. I don't think it has the groceries for Sharks.
A Bone stock 114H or a 9/0 can be had for a Benjamin and will fit that bill.
