Ok so I thought it was the ARB at first. But now I am not sure.
Here is a video I made to show what is happening

First happened fighting a stripped bass around 12lbs, reeling, the fish is pulling, drag going. Then the spool spins back and makes the weird noise you can hear in the video.
Yesterday I was fishing for channel cats and just reeling in my 3oz sinker it happened. So it is getting worse!

I tied off to a post in the video, and put a bend in the rod you can hear the drag going when I crank, then the weird noise at :08 seconds in.

I sent reel in for service but the guy couldn't replicate the issue and said he found nothing wrong. Cleaned and sent back.

I pulled the anti reverse bearing off last night, put it on the shaft and applied as much pressure to it as I could with my hands and it would not budge.

So now I am thinking maybe the gears are slipping? Maybe the clearances have become to much from use?

One thing I noticed that seemed odd when taking the ARB off, the shaft that it rides on with the bearings. Is it supposed to be able to slide down into the reel? I know it sits in there, but when I went to put the spool on I had to pull the shaft out as far as I could other wise there would not be enough thread to get the nut on on-top of the spool.

Any thoughts would be great!

Are you sure that your line is not slipping on the spool? Do you have braid on the bottom of the spool? If so did you tape the arbor?        Rudy

I did tape yes. The line is not slipping, the whole spool actually rotates backwards when it happens.  ??? ??? ???

I bet the toothed gear that holds everything together in the rear drag has stripped. I don't remember the part names right now.

When the reel goes from LL function to spool drag function there are 2 parts that lock together so the spool shaft doesn't spin. When in LL the spool shaft spins.

Under heavy drag the spool shaft intermediary spins and the catches. That's what you hear and feel.

Scotts MysticParts still has the parts and schematic for your reel so it shouldn't be a problem to repair.

With the reel assembled tighten the drag and turn the spool by hand. You should be able to replicate the problem.

Here is a picture of the "drag ratchet" for those reels. $1.80 at Scott's Bait and Tackle. Www.mysticparts.com.

Just pulled the reel apart, that part looks exactly as the picture. Does not look stripped at all... I am stumped! Anti Reverse holds strong. I am thinking maybe the pinion and main gear are slipping somehow? I really dont know what else could be the issue...If I send the reel to penn it will be around $60 to repair...I only paid $80 for the reel so really do not want to have to do that.

My guess is that it has something to do with the secondary drag system. If it were me, I'd rebuild it and go from there.

Toallhisdoom

You are correct! Was just playing around with it, and when the live liner drag is light it happens, when I tighten up the live liner drag is stops! So now to identify what is causing this....?

Check out the pieces attached to the side plate. Might just need to be cleaned and rebuilt. I like to use oil on parts like that as oil has a lower viscosity. Part #74 could be gunked up and not sliding. All the springs might be worth replacing as well.

I was working on one of these the other day that had a worn rear drag spring as well (part 86).

I only really have experience with Shimano Baitrunners but if the ratchet gear is fine then I would say either the bit that grabs it (I guess you could call it a dog but in the Shimanos it's more of a J shape) is damaged or is not seated correctly. If the reel functions OK with the liveliner drag wound up then I would speculate that the combination of the drag + the damaged ratchet is enough to hold it but once the drag is backed off it fails as per your video.

Apparently it's a fairly common issue with these reels.

The reel was just serviced and has been used once. So it should all be clean. I am thinking the spring that holds it from engaging sounds like a possible culprit!

I emailed the guy I had originally sent the reel to to have this fixed and let him know what I found about the live liner and he said to ship it back to him and he will cover the full cost of shipping and repairs as he feels he should have caught the issue when he had the reel the first time. Great customer service! Hopefully he will be able to fix the problem.

If it's not the ratchet it's the part that holds the ratchet from moving. Just like in the Shimano and other reels.

Got the reel back. He replaced 2 parts. Said neither of them looked "bad" or had any noticeable defects. But he replaced them and now it seems to work fine. Going striper fishing this week so will find out for sure. 74-5600 LIVE LINER DOG and 83-5600 REAR DRAG RATCHET.

That was it. The LL dog that catches the ratchet.
