Welcome Sebastian, you will enjoy it here. Just don't listen to me, I'll make you spend lots of money, but you'll end up with a great reel ;)

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

Hi, as many others have, I've been reading an lurking since I found this site a couple of weeks ago. I've been a member of THT for quite a few years but needed some more specific information regarding the mechanics of the reels and tutorials on how to do my own repairs/upgrades. Mr. Tani's name keeps coming up as one of the experts so here I am!

I'm currently rigging my new 2012 Grady White Marlin 300 for bigger offshore fishing. This is an upgrade from the GW Gulfstream 232 that I had for a couple of years before this boat. I wanted to get a big enough hull that I could spend a few more days offshore than I could with the 232, yet still tow it without escort vehicles and special permits. It's no 60' sportfisher but I sure like it and want to rig it right with good reels and rods.

I'm in NC and fish striper in Kerr Lake, Roanoke River, Chesapeake Bay and local inlets. I fish offshore from Oregon, Hatteras, Beaufort and Southport inlets, depending upon the time of year and what species I'm looking for.

I look forward to communicating with the members of this board and sucking up some of the tons of knowledge out there so thanks for having me as a member!
IT's not the fall that kills you, it's the sudden stop at the bottom!

Thanks Alan, yeah this boat is pretty heavy, which helps in the slop, but the twin 300 four strokes add a lot to the overall weight.

Thanks for the welcome Sebastian.

WOW , what a great site you have here.
I just bought a Penn 113 4/0 (black sides) on a Ugly Stick Tiger rod for $50. The combo looks new, but from reading some of the forums here it looks like I need to at least take it apart and lube it and maybe also change out the drag washers (1+5?) and install a ss gear sleeve from alantani (part number?). I think I will spool it with 80# braid and top coat it with 40# mono unless someone has a better idea.
From further reading the forums, it seems I would have been better off buying a 113H instead. I might get one off craigslist (if I can find one for the right price) to go on a new Quantum Blue Runner pole I just bought for $25. I mostly fish small sharks and offshore bottom dwellers here in SW Florida.
Looking forward to learning a lot more from the forums here. Henry
Not all fishing is done with rod and reel.

alantani

welcome.  yes, get the 113h.  it's a much better reel.
