OK....rookie here again. Several guys were kind enough to respond to my questions concerning lubes for this reel, now I have another issue. Tonight, I reassembled the main gear, bushing, ratchet wheel, washers & drag washers, sleeve, spring washers, etc., & finished putting the right side together. But....when I turn the main gear bushing (shaft), it simply spins inside the main gear. This makes absolutely no sense to me & I don't know what to do. Will someone please help me?

Bryan Young

:D I talk with every part I send out and each reel I repair so that they perform at the top of their game. :D

You did not mention putting on the star and tightening it slightly.

Thanks for your replies folks....Steve called it right. That's what I didn't figure out until midnight last night - kinda felt silly after I did. Seems so elementary, but then, I did say I'm a rookie, right? I'll tell you something else, when I started to learn how to do this stuff, I had no idea how much I was gonna enjoy it. That's why I was up so late last night, I couldn't put it down! It's addicting. And this forum is so informative. Even though I am a freshwater guy (ain't no saltwater in Tennessee), I have learned so much!

However, I think I have identified an issue with the "main" bearing (Part # 13472 on drawing Alan sent me - thanks Alan). It's a roller bearing & I want to take it out & clean it out & regrease or replace. How do I get it out?

Dennis

it's pressed in, so it stays.  pressing them out to replace them usually damages the thin stamped sheet metal side plate.   :-\

I'm sorry Alan. Still learning terminology too. I told you the wrong bearing part #. The roller bearing I was talking about is COMPL. 1092454. It is inside the plastic housing that mounts over the right side cover. I guess you have to buy the entire thing to get the bearing. I'm gonna try to remove it, or at least, clean & pack it in place. Little nervous about it though, it's surrounded by plastic, so not sure what to clean it with?

Hi FD --

Like Alan sez -- it stays...

You can possibly remove it -- but it will not be the same tightness after reinstalling.

I learned long ago, that although I could remove a bearing pressed into plastic -- a can of worms generally awaited me later -- either in the form of a broken or weakened plate hole, the bearing not seating due to slop, or parts no longer available.

My fix has been to soak the bearing and plate in hot water with Dawn dish soap overnight --

Use a round brush in a drill chuck to clean out just after removing from the soap --

Rinse with clean hot water --

Dry --

Soak in 321 oil for a couple of hours --

Chuck up an old same diameter gear sleeve to turn the bearing and free up any junk still in there --

Blow it out and put a couple of drops of 321 back on the rollers --

Should be good to go --

Manufacturers use plastic because they tell us it is lighter -- the real reason is cheaper assembly time labor, and cheaper to manufacture.

When servicing reels -- it is generally quicker and more efficient to your operation -- to go with the proven high percentage fix procedures.

Thanks for the advice Fred...I really appreciate it. I'll follow your procedures this afternoon. One question O Wise One, what is this 321 you speak of & where can I get it?

You will have it on your bench within a couple of days --

They sell small quantities, or larger if you wish.

I get a gallon that lasts me between 2-3 years -- just feed it into small bottle needle applicators.

Thanks again Fred....& everyone else. I'll get me some.

Well, I have another issue with this thing....it's frustrating & making me think maybe reel maintenance/repair is not my bag. Before I put the bearing in to soak, just for grins & giggles, I put it all together just to see how it would reel - well, it didn't. In order to get the spool to turn, I have to tighten the drag so tight I can barely turn the handle, & even then the spool would only move a little. With the assembled right side off frame, it only takes a slight amount of drag & all gears spin freely & quietly. Put right side & spool on & no-go.

Help please ? I'm at my wits end on this thing!

alantani

back off or remove the spool tension cap and make sure the brakes are not engaged, or just remove the brakes all together (if you have them).

Thanks Mr. Alan, but it doesn't have a spool tension & no brakes. It has a clutch washer on the right end of the spool. Magnetic "brakes" in left side. It has to be something with the spool or clutch, & for the life of me, I can't figure it out.

Dennis

FishDad

Mr. Alan....looks like I may have accidentally discovered the problem. In the left side, there are magnetic brakes that has a "magnetic plate" (part #50) that sits on top of the magnets. The spool is apparently contacting the plate. I removed the plate (it just sits on top of magnets) & all seems well. What I don't understand is why - I put the plate back exactly where it was (had to remove it to get to the left side screws), & I know it was not contacting the spool when I got the reel.

Got any ideas?

Dennis

Dominick

I don't know anything about that reel but shouldn't the metal plate be attached to the spool in some way to create the magnetic field?  Dominick
Leave the gun.  Take the cannolis.

There are two things I don't like about fishing.  Getting up early in the morning and boats.  The rest of it is fun.
