Penn 710 Bail/ PUM Question

So I made a PUM by cutting and grinding the bail wire. But when I put it on with the spring etc. It doesn't quite tighten all the way. Leaves just a little wiggle, rocks in and out just a tad, but that can't be good. Might be enough room for braid to get stuck or affect line lay? Could I try a washer? Just afraid it will cover the little hole the spring loads into. Any thoughts?
