Penn Long Beach 60 Build Help

I'm hot rodding a Penn 60. I've got Bryan Youngs 5+1 drag kit. The doner reels I'm using are in good shape with smooth factory steel gears.

1) I'm on mysticparts and they list a gen 1 and gen 2 tani stainless gear sleeve. Do I get the gen 2 to run with Bryan youngs drag kit?

2) Is there a factory penn drag star that's larger than the star that came on the 60? I'm really trying to keep it stock looking but with upgrades. I like big stars but don't want to run aftermarket.

3) Keta is out of the 60 steel dogs, does anyone have one I might buy?

4) is there a larger old schoolish looking factory handle that fits the 60? Preferably something with color?

Again I'm wanting to keep it old school looking with factory penn parts.


Am I missing any must have improvements?

  Hmm...let's see if I can answer some of this.
1. Generation 1 and 2 sleeves refers to how the sleeve is cut. Gen 2 has the key cut all the way down to the ratchet,
allowing for the use of Bryan's under gear washer set. Just get a Gen 1 since this item won't fit your LB's main gear...but at least you can see what Gen 2 is all about.   https://www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Custom/4-500SPBY.aspx
2. You can use a larger #10-66 or #10-49 star on your LB. The 66 is thicker...and the 49 is the same thickness as your 60 star.
3. Can't help here...
4. Several larger handles fit that LB...#24-55, #24-56, #24-112H, and #24-49. MysticParts has all these in a black knob.
For colored knobs check eBay.

What Mo said, plus you might want to think about an aluminium spool (if your donor reels don't have one already) The 29L-85 fits although Scott's have run out and they are are getting harder to find on the auction sites but do turn up, sometimes in a cheap 85.
I can't help with the steel 15-99 dogs either.

   Yes...spool supplies have dwindled lately...gotta search hard for some models. Another option is the #29M-60, the stainless matte finished spool. I really like these on a LB60. Here's a LB60 with that old school look Trevor, it has the #29M-60 spool and a #24-55 handle.

So the gen 2 sleeve will not fit the steel LB 60 gears? Scott's does not have the gen 1 anymore it's been discontinued according the the gal I talked to on the phone.

Any other sources?

   Sure, it will fit just fine. What I meant was that Bryan's under gear set(made for the #5-500 gear)
won't fit your LB60's #5-60 gear. Sorry for the confusion.

Another thing you could add is a clamp seat for your long beach 60. Fairly uncommon, but can be found every so often.
