Hi....I have read all 45 pages under the penn tutorial and dont see any on the 650SSM reel.   Can someone advise if there is one??  or one on a similar reel?   Many thanks....

Hello Jim from Wisconsin,

In the absence of a 650SSM tutorial I would use this schematic and take pictures as I go along. The basic principles are the same in all the Penn Spinfisher spinners, the details are shown by the schematic.... Maybe you can make a tutorial as you go along? A lot of the tutorials have fallen victim to the Photobucket fiasco and are much less useful than they would be with intact photos....

Jim the bottom end of the reel is just like all the other Penn SS reels and many more.

The top end uses an anti reverse bearing to keep the reel from going backwards. The SSM reels are easier and faster to service. From the factory you will find hardly any lubrication.

First remove the side cover. Then the screws into the crosswind block. Pull the spool shaft out and remove the spool.

There are 3 screws to remove the pinion gear, clutch bearing, and pinion bearing. After the 3 screws are removed twist the black retainer and it will come out easier.

Not to disagree with you Keith, but the 650ss is a different animal. Spool is interchangeable on some and that's about it.
I prefer the 650ss over the 650ssm or any other ssm...just my opinion.

I had a tutorial on the 750ssm here but somehow it disappeared, I'm not even sure that was possible, but it's gone :-\

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will.

The lower end is the same as all the other SS reels in design and construction, take apart and service. The parts are different. That was my meaning. Most all the SSM reels Ive had come through were terribly corroded inside. The factory just didnt grease these reels.

On a side note 3 Redfish, 2 Flounder, and one Speckled Trout, off the dock today. All in one hour ;D

Thanks to all for the info...Ihave the schematic and after seeing the pictures etc it looks pretty simple....Dont know what drag washers are in this yet but if not carbontex do you all recommend changing them??  Thanks...

Yup, that is what I meant, The brass gears vs cast aluminum. I also trust the anti-reverse on the SS better.
Gears corroding is not the only problem on those. I guess if you don't abuse it as you would an SS model you would be ok.

You did really good in an hour, very nice!

Sorry for pulling away from your question Noviceman, I'm not sure you have the same schematics, I'll post it here.
The top two washers are HT 100 the third is Teflon, just as the ss.
I made a mistake earlier, The tutorial I had up was the V7500 and not the 750ssm.

Here is the schematic:

The SSM is a pretty straight forward one. If you can find a tutorial for an original Penn slammer it's almost identical.

Only thing that you really need to be concerned with on these is installing the spool shaft into the crosswind block before you allow the rotor to move. There isn't a switch to disengage the anti-reverse so it's possible to lock up the reel.

I like the SSMs and slammers. I fish with a few.

Many thanks to all....appreciate all the help and advise...Love this site..

Sal you were right on stating it has 2 ht 100 and 1 teflon....and no grease on anything...is it necessary to grease the teflon washer with cals like the ht100s?    Hope this isnt a dumb question..

Not at all Jim, there is never a dumb question here.
The HT-100 should be lightly greased, must of us are happy with using Cals. There is no need to grease the Teflon, but some will get on it and it won't hurt.
I did replace the Teflon washer on all my spinners and I do like it better. This would be the Teflon in the stack and not the one under the spool, that one is fine.
Bryan has some nice kits, the "Ultimate Upgrades". Those consist of 5 carbon fiber washers instead of 3.
I'm not sure if he has any for the 650 yet, he does have them for the 750.
These kits make the drag a little smoother... a good upgrade.

I'm not sure on what type of drag knob you have on your reel, I replaced the one on all my spinners with this one
https://www.mysticparts.com/PennParts/Parts/52N-650N.aspx

It is much stronger and it comes with a seal.

Best, Sal
