Hi Alan what are your latest thoughts on the gear thickness in these reels, I find the unique 70 size at 74 ounces hard to resist (for big malin and giant bluefin stand up)

I had trouble getting the shift button retaining ring off when servicing my 50 VISX.

I bought one of those cheap strap wrench sets from Harbor Freight.  Unfortunately, the rubber strap was too thick to get between the shift button retaining ring and the shift lever even with the shift in low.  I noticed in the tutorial that some strap wrenches use a nylon webbing strap rather than rubber, but I did not have any appropriate material...

So I found another way to do it.  I cinched a zip tie around the knurled retaining ring and grabbed it with my Channel-locks.  It spun the retaining ring right off and left no marks on the ring.  Hope I remember thia trick next winter!

john, if you push the button down into low gear, you might get enough clearance to use the strap wrench.  the spanner wrench that comes with the reel is enough to remove the ring, all by itself.
